This study investigates the hydrodynamic effects of bridge clogging caused by floating debris. The research aims to develop a process-based model, and to implement it in a 2D operational hydrodynamic model, to simulate the impact of debris accumulation on the water level. For that, laboratory experiments based on field data are conducted and analysed to understand the physics behind this phenomenon and to be able to model it. Applying this model to real-world scenarios in Belgium and Germany, the study will provide insights into the risks and behaviours associated with debris-induced clogging, helping to improve flood management strategies in regions vulnerable to waterway obstructions.
