Design for subjective wellbeing in post-stroke rehabilitation services

How can architecture contribute to the well-being of post-stroke inpatients in rehabilitation services? And how can healthcare establishments (re)integrate the well-being of their employees and carers—whether formal (doctors, nurses, maintenance staff, etc.) or informal (family members, caregivers, volunteers, etc.)—from the very beginning of the planning and design phases of care environments? A four-year research project involving the Universities of Liège and Hasselt, as well as the CHU (Liège) and ZOL (Genk) hospitals, explores architectural typologies in hospital environments (from ‘beds,’ ‘rooms,’ and ‘services’ to a more systemic level) and develops innovative architectural solutions to address these challenges. With the active participation of stroke patients, caregivers, and hospital staff, this research project aims to improve living conditions and subjective well-being in care and post-stroke rehabilitation environments by responding as effectively as possible to the preferences, values, and needs of the various stakeholders.
