Geophysical research in Andenne
A research team from ULiège, consisting of Frédéric Nguyen, Line Van Wersch, and Tom Debouny, conducted geophysical research in Andenne.
Following practical work carried out by students in collaboration with the city of Andenne, this team of researchers set out to explore the subsurface of Place du Chapitre without resorting to archaeological excavations.
In fact, thanks to geophysics, non-invasive investigations are possible to gather initial information about the secrets buried beneath the cobblestones of this square.
The use of electromagnetic induction and electrical resistivity tomography will make it possible to detect potential remains by mapping the soil’s electrical properties.
This research should help the city and Carole Hardy, the archaeologist in charge at the EMA (Espace Muséal d’Andenne), determine whether it is appropriate to consider future excavations. This research is part of an archaeological monitoring initiative focused on the remains of a medieval monastery of Merovingian origin that once stood on this site.
