The Wood Challenge: a wood construction competition that challenges engineering students to test and apply their theoretical knowledge. On 24 and 25 January at the Wex in Marche-en-Famenne, it brought together 127 students from 5 institutions in the provinces of Liège and Luxembourg, including the University of Liège, which placed 2 of its teams on the podium. Well done!

fter "Wood to the floche", "Woody Wood Poker" and "Wood to the cloche", the now famous Challenge Bois competition set up by the department UEE (Architecture, Geology, Environment and Construction) of the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the University of Liège, in collaboration with the non-profit organisation Ressources Naturelles Développement (RND) and the organisers of the Batimoi® exhibition, brought together no less than 127 students, divided into 23 teams, from 5 higher and secondary technical institutions in the provinces of Liège and Luxembourg, for its 4th edition on 24 and 25 January at Wex in Marche-en-Famenne:

  • Block 3 students of the Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a major in Construction and Civil Engineering Architect from the University of Liège,
  • 2nd year students of the Bachelor's degree at the Haute Ecole Libre Mosane (Gramme),
  • students of the construction orientation in 3rd year at the Haute Ecole de la Province de Liège (ISIL),
  • 3rd year students of the Bachelor's degree in Wood Construction at the Robert Schuman University of Applied Sciences (Libramont),
  • students of the Saint-Roch technical college in Marche-en-Famenne.

"Wood you fish?" 5 min to bring back the fish!

Since its creation in 2016, this wood construction competition has aimed to challenge future engineering students, allowing them to test and put into practice their theoretical knowledge (from the design of the structure to its completion, including the crucial phases of calculations and modelling).

The challenge of this 4th edition Wood Challenge? To build a wooden structure - the cheapest possible - allowing to catch a "fish" (target object), placed on the ground but in a gauge of 4 meters high and 3 meters wide; all this, in less than 5 minutes chrono... and without the structure collapsing!

After several months of intensive work on their projects during the first quarter and a day of assembly of the structures the day before the competition, the grand finale was held at the Wex as part of the Batimoi® exhibition, allowing candidates to test their wooden structure "live", in front of an audience of supporters, parents, friends, teachers and colleagues alike.

On the podium, 2 ULiège teams proudly distinguished themselves, alongside the Gramme students:

  1. "Free Willy" (ULiège) - whose structure cost a total of 83.17 euros
  2. "Alpha Gramme" (Gram Institute) - whose structure cost a total of 83.34 euros
  3. "Fishing and leisure" (ULiège) - whose structure cost a total of 90.22 euros

Congratulations to all and see you next year!
