Towing tank
The tests and experiments carried out in the hull tank relate to measurements of resistance to forward motion, optimization of ship hulls and seakeeping. The tests carried out in the tank are aimed at vessels operating in deep water (seagoing vessels) and limited water (inland navigation vessels).
The hull tank is also an essential tool for validating the numerical models (CFD) developed and used by our researchers. A new research project on boat trajectography is currently under development, and tank tests are planned to validate the model.
Major investments have been made in this area in recent years, including the installation of a removable bottom (enabling tests to be carried out at shallow depths), and the installation of variable-angle banks (enabling realistic canal and river conditions to be recreated).
The laboratory also carries out research into optimizing boat hulls for inland navigation, by adding a bow bulb and/or injecting air into a cavity under the hull.
The ULg hull tank is a member ofITTC (International Towing Tank Conference).
