Quantification of water flux and insulation dynamic of newly roof structures with recycled materials.

Schematic representation of green roof

The thermal insulation and water retention capacity of the green roofs can be improved using recycled materials in the substrate and drainage layers. In addition, the high porosity of recycled materials can lead to accelerating the leakage of water from the green roof. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to test the insulation dynamic and water retention capacity of the extensive green roofs based on recycled built materials, acting as habitat analogous to dry grassland. This project focuses on benchmarking of recycled materials suitable for analogous green roof implementation in the first step. Thereafter, the plant community functional responses to different substrates (recycled building material) and their environmental conditions will be analyzed. Later on, the water flux and insulation dynamic of green roof will be quantified. Finally, the computational modelling software will be used to optimize the thickness of layers, expected compactness (and porosity) in order to achieve insulation performances.
